Dietetics and Disease

 

This section deals with the more serious consequences of a poor diet. Many diseases are closely linked to problems with our diet and so by understanding these diseases and taken measures to prevent them, we will be able to live a long an happy life. Here we will look at the main diseases linked to diet included diabetes, disorders of the stomach, coronary heart disease, hyperlipidaemia, hypertension, osteoperosis and food allergies.

20. Diabetes

Here we will look at both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, examining how this illness is identified, what other diseases it could lead to and how to treat it using dietary measures.

21. Disorders of the stomach and colon

An examination of the major diseases of the stomach and colon including indigestion, heartburn and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). For each an examination of causes and treatments will be outlined.

22. Coronary Heart Disease

A detailed module covering the definition and causes of CHD, including differentiating Angina, heart attacks and heart failure from one another, understanding the risk factors and the importance of prevention.

23. Dyslipidaemia

The disease linked to where there is an excess of fatty substances called lipids, largely cholesterol, in the blood. This module will cover its causes and how it can be prevented.

24. Hypertension

The disease linked to high blood pressure, this disease will be examined in detail to understand how this disease is triggered by our diet and how it can be prevented through dietary measures.

25. Osteoporosis

It is the disease that leads to bone thinning and can be identified through cramps, loss of height and regular broken bones. We will examine the risk factors and discuss how it can be prevented.

26. Food allergies and Intolerances

This module will cover a number of aspects relating to food intolerances including their causation, the different types of allergy, the potential risks of non-treatment, various symptoms to be aware of and different methods of treatment.
